The John the Baptist cathedral was built between 1491 and 1498 upon the remains of three former churches.
As Turin was the capital city of the Kingdom of Piedmon-Sardinia, the cathedral is one of two in which members of the royal family are buried in.
At the rear end of the cathedral, you can see the Chapel of The Holy Shroud, where The Shroud was kept. After a fire in 1997, the chapel was heavily damaged and underwent a complex restauration that took 21 years to complete.
For the moment, the Shroud is kept in a separate section on the ground floor of the cathedral.

This photo is taken at the entrance of the cathedral and shows the mid section with at the end the altar.
Behind the altar is the sacred chapel where the Shroud of Jesus was kept, an architectural masterpiece by architect-priest and mathematician Guarino Guarini.
A large glass wall separates the chapel from the cathedral.

This is a full view on the location where The Shroud of Jesus is kept today, in the left back corner of the cathedral. Right in front of The Shroud you can kneel down for The Holy Shroud. A prayer in different Choose Your Language is available for all visitors.

This photo is a closeup of the altar and the Holy Chapel behind it. During my visit it wasn’t possible to visit the inside of the Holy Chapel, but I hope you can see that the architecture is absolutely amazing.

This is a closeup of the Holy Shroud, with a beautiful reflection in the glass of the organ and altar.
The Leichel’s have a special relationship with organs. Our ancestors have been organ builders for many years and you can still find several of them in Dutch churches.
Kneeling down and praying before The Holy Shroud was a very special moment for me. Knowing that my father has spent 20 years of research into this very Shroud. I feel blessed that I had this unique opportunity.

Above the entrance of the cathedral there is a huge painting of Christ’s last supper with his disciples. A beautiful version of Leonardo da Vincis’ original.
In fact, I was in Turin a few day after the opening's ceremony of the Olympic games in Paris. With that horrible imitation of this sacred historical moment in Jesus' life.
I have been to Paris many times, but after that shocking scene, Paris will never be the Paris I loved so much before. It's a tragedy.
In Don’s book Sworn To Secrecy both Paris and Christ’s last supper play an important role

On both sides of the cathedral are several smaller chapels, each with an unprecedented beauty.

Golden Symphony: The Majestic Organ of the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in Turin

This photo showcases the interior of the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in Turin, with a focus on an ornate golden altar at the end of a long aisle. The altar is richly decorated with carvings and religious iconography, and it appears to be illuminated by light sources that are not visible in the image. The floor has a checkered pattern, and there are columns on either side supporting the structure.
